- Conventional Boilers: Sometimes called regular boilers, these utilize both a water tank and a cylinder. They are well-suited for traditional properties with high hot water usage.
Wiring, Boiler Controls
Wiring boiler controls typically involves connecting a central programmer/timer, thermostats, and motorized zone valves to a wiring centre. The system routes a mains power supply (usually fused at 3A), neutral, and earth to the components, while the thermostats and valves send a "switched live" signal to fire the boiler.
Smart Thermostats: Salus offers a range of wired and wireless room thermostats (such as the popular RT520RF, RT510RF, and Quantum SQ610RF) designed to seamlessly replace traditional boiler controls. Many of these feature OpenTherm and load compensation, allowing your boiler to adjust its output based on the precise temperature needed.
Hive smart controls allow you to manage your central heating and hot water remotely via the Hive Home App. The system operates using a central thermostat, smart radiator valves for room-by-room zoning, and a hub that links everything to your broadband router.
- App Control: Adjust temperatures, view real-time home data, and toggle settings from anywhere.
- Scheduling: Set different target temperatures for specific times and days, and automate your hot water if you have a separate cylinder.
- Boost Mode: Temporarily increase your heating or hot water for a set duration (e.g., 1 to 6 hours) without altering your regular schedule.
- Multizone/Smart Radiator Valves (TRVs): Control different areas of your home independently, allowing you to heat only the rooms you are using.
- Geolocation & Holiday Mode: Sends alerts if you leave the heating on when going out. Holiday mode maintains a baseline temperature to protect pipes from freezing while you are away.
- Voice Assistant Integration: Compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit.
Hot water cylinders

Hot water cylinders are categorized primarily by how they are fed with water:
- Unvented Cylinders: These tanks connect directly to the cold mains water supply, meaning they do not require a separate cold water storage tank. They deliver water at high, balanced mains pressure, making them ideal for powerful showers and multiple bathrooms. Unvented systems require safety valves and, in the UK, must be installed by a qualified engineer certified to the G3 Building Regulations.
- Vented Cylinders: These systems rely on gravity to feed water, using a cold water storage tank typically located in the loft. Because they operate at lower pressure compared to unvented systems, they are often a simpler, more cost-effective choice.
